The Tuesday Talks series invites leading artists, thinkers and curators to explore the driving forces, influences and sources of inspiration within contemporary art. The series is programmed by Professor Pavel Büchler and is supported by the Manchester Metropolitan University.
Vincenzo de Bellis
Vincenzo de Bellis is a Co-Director of Peep-Hole, a not-for-profit organization in Milan, dedicated to contemporary art.
With an exhibition programme that’s included Rosalind Nashashibi, Mario Garcia Torres and Ahmed Ögüt, Peep-Hole encourages audiences to take a closer look at individual artists’ practices through an agile programme of exhibitions, publications, lectures and conversations. Focused on foregrounding artists, Peep-Hole’s mission is to “weed out useless superstructures, replacing them with a leaner relationship between artwork and viewer”.
A highly-respected curator, lecturer and writer, Andrea Schlieker conceived and curated the inaugural Folkestone Triennial in 2008. She also directed the most recent Triennial, A Million Miles from Home, commissioning new works by 19 international artists including Charles Avery, Martin Creed, Cristina Iglesias and Cornelia Parker.
Schlieker was co-curator of the British Art Show 6, and has a long track record in curating national and international exhibitions as well as major public art projects. A member of the Public Realm Commissioning Advisory Panel for the Olympic Park, Schlieker was also a juror for the 2009 Turner Prize.
Since the 1970s artist Peter Kennard has been committed to effecting political change by distributing photomontages through the mass media. He is well-known for the images he produced for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and many of his montages are now owned by Tate Britain. He has recently produced @earth a 192 page photo essay that uses images alone to argue that the attempt by a few to dominate the majority and exploit global resources has led to wars and crises of the economy and the environment. Kennard is a senior tutor in Photography at the Royal College of Art.
In Milena Dragicevic’s paintings, faces and objects mutate into ambiguous sculptural forms that often are doubled, stretched orreversed. She is currently working on a new series under the umbrella title Erections for Transatlantica, described by Lisa Le Feuvre as “unnamed assemblages that couple obsolete industrial machines with misplaced epic public sculpture… In spite of their precision, Dragicevic’s paintings are always both one thing and the other: painting and sculpture, figurative and abstract, always defiantly refusing to settle down into either subject or object position.”
Dragicevic was born in former Yugoslavia and emigrated to western Canada in her youth. She is included in the British Art Show 7: In The Days of the Comet, currently showing in Plymouth.
