Raw Social 25/8: Music performance by Sidiki Dembele & DJ

August 17, 2012
Coming Saturday the Whitworth will transform into a music hall! We are pleased to invite drummer Sidiki Dembele and a DJ to mix some really cool beats of contemporary African music. In his native lands there is a rich history in storytelling, folklore, and communicating news all through the magical medium of music. Hailing from Côte d’Ivoire, Sidiki Dembele founded the very successful performance and teaching music group Denifari Djembe. Grown from the slums of Abidjan, his native city, the group rapidly gained popularity and distinction, performed throughout West Africa, and managed a music school too. The performance company is nationally recognised as a highly effective means of offering a constructive alternative lifestyle to the impoverished youth of the community. Richly steeped in their heritage, the company includes drummers, balafonists, Ngoni players, singers and dancers. Now in the UK, he is touring the North West in hopes of beginning a djembe performance school right here!He is currently working on a new project with his band DjembeKan, who fuse together contemporary DJ style with ancient traditional instruments and rhythms.

Come dance, and feast your ears with some funky tribal beats!
